Total crap.
At my company there is no issue with gender diversity. Its approx. 50% female at the manager level and 60% at the associate level.

The recruiting at traditional black schools is a good idea but, the only University near enough to our Company to recruit from had 10 graduating students in the major we need. I can't see putting in place an expensive personalized recruiting program for a pool that small. The other five Universities we go to have classes of approx. 100-200.

To me it seems if we really want to focus on diversity, it need to come from HR rethinking their practices so we get in touch with people from other races. It shouldn't come from the employees involved in recruiting favoring certain skin tones which is how I perceived her instructions, probably incorrectly. Thanks everyone for adding some clarification.

Maybe they were just reminding people to not hire with racist motives. It does get complicated. For example they were giving you a reminder about what not to ask because in that case there are laws about what you can ask or not. Then they reminded you of diversity(a company goal) maybe because they know of some people on the team that may only hire whites in the past. That is one possibility.

My husband worked for a company and the new boss came in and was a racist. They discovered he had a secret way of noting on applicants applications their color so he would know not to hire them. This is despicable and thankfully my husband's immediate boss, a white guy, found this disgusting and helped get the head boss fired.

But if they hire an Indian woman, they meet their diversity goals in more than one way!

White women have benefitted the most from Affirmative Action, so at least it's working for one group.

Only one this is certain and that is the HR director had terrible communications skills. My company has one of the most diverse workforce. American, French, Asian, Mexican, Indian, Belgian, Lebanese people abound. That said, unspoken rule is to have 50% American and 50% rest in the team. By American I do not mean white and by rest I don't mean brown/yellow. It is just the nationality.

I was one of those who did workforce analytics for a major corporation. The process of identifying where to focus diversity recruiting efforts is very complicated and takes into consideration recruiting areas and skills from the census and educational institutions. It isn't good enough just to recruit applicants, you need qualified applicants. That said an employer cannot set the 'qualifications' in such a way as to bias the qualified applicant pool. Most employers use electronic screening tools where the qualifications are derived from the job description.

Once the qualified applicant pool is identified an analysis of the selection system is made to assure that there is no discrimination and, yes, whites are just as protected as minorities.

Here are some lessons learned from tech conferences on increasing diversity, that can apply to the workplace too: https://aralbalkan.com/notes/on-fals...and-diversity/

As we all know, if you keep doing the same actions, you'll get the same results, so how do you change the paradigm?
