For the record, I am in Desktop Support, but even I spend about 30-40% of my day at my desk responding to emails, doing remote calls, logging inventory, filling out paperwork, etc.. It's just the nature of the game.

I started out in IT. I liked the people, but hated the day to day. I was spending most of my time using technology. I wanted to be a technology creator, not a user. I switched to computer science and love it.

For what it's worth, there should be a huge spike in demand for domestic IT security jobs in the wake of the Target and Home Depot hackings. Once the regulators step it, the retailers will be forced to spend on their infrastructure.
