I have seen a number of stupid things that people have done that got them fired, but I think this one takes the cake. I work for a security company and we walk up and down lots of stairs checking the building for anything, whether they be intruders, something wrong, etc. typical stuff. One of the floors is owned by a telecom company and we aren't supposed to take anything from the vending machines or use anything from the commissary. There are of course cameras. Anyway, last week we had a new hire, she seemed nice enough if a little ditzy. Yesterday though she was caught on camera taking from the vending machines and also picking up a thing of honey and actually squirting it in her mouth. Yeah, my boss and those that have that floor were NOT happy. She was subsequently fired obviously.

Amazing how dumb people can be.

When I worked at an upscale department store, one of the janitors walked out at the end of the shift, in broad daylight, with merchandise he hadn't paid for...a vacuum cleaner and set of dishes. Employees had a 20 percent discount, so it makes it seem even more stupid.

At another workplace, a sales representative AND the HR director were both fired for drinking alcohol on the job. I kind of wondered why the HR director made numerous trips out to his car during the day, and why his face was always red. He and the sales representative were given an opportunity at company paid rehab to dry out, but it didn't work. The HR later committed suicide. Sad.

The most egregious story of someone who was fired for cause any place I worked was one who got caught stealing. A short time later, the reference card came back. Turned out, he was fired from that company for stealing!

I heard about a real brain trust seasonal wildfire fighter who took a bundle of fire axe handles out of the agency warehouse and tried to sell them to a local hardware store. Unfortunately, this store happened to be the one that sold the axes TO the agency 2 months earlier. They recognized their own price stamp on the axes.

If that wasn't bad enough, the same kid was caught actually setting a fire. It had been a rainy summer with no fires, so the crews weren't earning hazard pay. This kid filled a gas can at a station (while driving his official truck), drove up a logging road and lit the fire. A state cop happened to see him leaving the area after noticing smoke.

Many years ago I heard about a manager of a local wildlife reserve who ordered some of the reserve's maintenance workers to fence his private property with fenceposts and wire purchased for official use. The fenceposts were the exact same type/color used for the reserve....someone noticed.

Ive seen people do absolutely nothing except succeed, but because they weren't lovers/pets of upper management they were the first to be let go when it came "cost cutting time" AKA. "I need another yacht" time

We had someone watch porn on a work computer at his desk at one of my previous jobs. Needless to say he didn’t last long.

We also had someone who would get wasted at lunch every day at my first job. Because we could work from home she was able to hide it for a while but would stupidly tell people including her boss. Needless to say the boss got rid of her quickly.

Sorry, why didn't they just gently remind her and give her a warning. Your company now wants to post a new job, screen, hire and then retrain a new person because the old one took from the vending machine??????

Mod cut., I'd hate working at your company and would probably do what she did just for ****s sake. Then when they inevitably fired me, I'd arrogantly scoff and go "I was gunna quit anyway!"

To answer your question, this employee who had been at my old employer for longer than 20 years was running her mouth about how much she hated the company. She grew bolder and bolder and I knew people were listening. She was eventually fired, for that exact reason, and she was one of their longest employees people who had been there.

She was pretty stupid.
