I am still highly doubtful there is any kind of post-mortal awareness of existence. As such, I would not be willing to sacrifice more than a year of my time away from my family... and no, seeing them for 4 weekends a year is not enough!

For $150K for 1 year? That's $12500/mo x 1.5 mo = $18750 in vacation pay. I think I would.

Singapore? NO way. And I currently see my family once a year and have nothing that keeps me here.
But no way I move to Asia or Africa, ever.

I think you'll find your lifestyle too restrictive. JMHO. Living like a cloistered monk is no way to live. You're a grown ass man with a family. Live within your means and build a life together.

read the thread. I'm guessing you aren't talking about a spouse and toddler kids that you only see twice a year.

I think when people started living the reality they would quickly quit. These employers are not your family, you will not be in the most posh hip nice units in the nice areas working a flex schedule and soaking up the culture from the rich ritzy areas. You will be in a marginal area with tons of traffic and noise, like some kind of urban man camp.

Back in the day they used to have positions like this in Saudi where you could literally retire after like 2-3 years of doing this and I think they were even accompanied so you and your wife suffer for a few years (but not to much because you can share an AC bed room together to have some adult fun still) and your done working for the rest of your life. Not so anymore, the pay is really paltry and accompanied moves are more rare and if you are not retiring in luxury after 3 years whats the point?

To go see sand storms 130F temps and a culture that hates you, no thanks.

Why cannot the OP take the family to Singapore with him? Cost? wife's career? It is a wealthy westernised country where English is the common language so there would not be cultural issues.
A car is absolutely not needed as the public transport is excellent. The schools are world class.
OP, if you are looking for places to take the family for a holiday, the fares to Australia on AirAsia are dirt cheap.
But if you go you must not miss going to Sabah.

It ended up being a nightmare. He got sick (severe pneumonia with numerous complications) and needed to be hospitalized and then had a long recovery period. It turned out that not only did he not have paid sick days or disability but because he missed so much work he was penalized by being fired and losing his sign-in bonus and his paid return plane ticket.

I'm not sure how typical this is, but for him it was a huge financial disaster.
My sister and her family lived in Shanghai for years and loved it. Before that they were in Malaysia and they are now in the Middle East. I doubt if they will, ever return home as they love living in that region so much.
