I see "we are hiring" signs everywhere. The problem is that minimum wage is still around $7 something here. Not surprised at all about the worker shortages here.
Everywhere is hiring here. Target starts at $17/hr.
Even the state can't find plow drivers and are forced to advertise on highways with construction signs!
people figured out they can make the same amount or more in the "gig Economy" and not have to get greasy, sweaty or dirty. making about the same driving food or people around as they did stacking pallets in a 90 degree warehouse, and they can work when they want to work and not have to be there when the boss says you have to, at times when there are not enough drivers they raise the pay until enough people log in as available to drive.
That's who the McJobs are competing with now, they have to raise their wages enough to make it worth it to be in a hot kitchen all day or night forced to work a shift you don't wanna work, as apposed to driving around in your air conditioned car.
Are they paying well? It took 3 days to get in for an inspection and a plate mount on my car here. Had to leave the car there all day. They said they are desperate for mechanics no matter how much they offer in pay and they don't understand why.
Pay depends on your level but yes, you get paid well especially if you have a lot of experience. In the auto industry, its hard to find people who want to make this a career these days. I have been in parts for 34 years and have never seen anything like this. The pandemic I feel has changed peoples outlooks.
Do they demand experience to get the job? Or do they hire people fresh out of training without experience?
They dont demand that. They do like to hire newbies and bring them up through the ranks. Those people start out as lube techs(oil changers) at lower pay and as they prove themselves, they get brought up. I can tell you that some last and do well, lots dont.

That's good. Very rare to find employers who don't enforce a catch-22 for career jobs.
I'm wondering about worker shortage too. Is unemployment rate also high during worker shortage? If not, then does it mean there are more jobs out there recently created?
