They only look at convictions, not charges. For example, someone could be charged w/ multiple violent felonies in multiple states, but if they haven't been caught/brought to trial AND convicted, then nothing would show up on a background check. Or, someone could have been convicted of a non violent felony 10 or 20 years ago (depending on how far they go on a background check) and that conviction could mean being denied employment. Meanwhile, the serial felon could get the job.

The basic courtroom tactic should be remembered. Don't disclose anything. Period.

This is terrible advice, unless you’re absolutely positive the situation will not show up on a background check.
If you don’t disclose something, and it comes up on a background check, that’s grounds for termination, right there, at least at jobs I used to work at.
