That is my plan beginning in Jan. 2013. I will live in Belgrade from Jan. to the end of June and then back home from July through December. I plan on doing this for two years minimum, and was wondering if anyone else has done this (but not in Serbia, of course!) and would have some advice to share about their experiences.

My main concerns are my car sitting for that length of time and finding someone reliable to live in my house and take care of my pets and pay the utilities plus pay $100 to me as I live a block from the beach, and this as well as the other amenities where I live are SUPER and it would be quite a deal!!!!

In my view, a 6-month turnaround is not realistic, because of the cost of maintaining two habitations, plus the hassle of re-establishing utilities twice a year, plus the transport cost of the RT ticket every year. Most of my life, I've been trying to work my way around that, and it never seems to come together. The only way I can think of to do is, is to find somebody else who wants to do the same thing, in opposite seasons, and just switch houses twice a year. Maintain them both as joint occupancy, but never see each other.

I know a couple who lives half a year in NYC and half a year in India. I know that they own their apt. in NYC (the mortgage was paid off years ago) and that they rent an apt./home during their stay in India. I don't know any further details, but this shows that it is possible and realistic thing to do if the circumstances are right.

i usually work 6 months out of the year and travel the rest of the time, but i travel for work as well so don't really live anywhere, don't have a permanent residence anywhere. maybe not the best person to ask.

honestly never understood why ppl w a bunch of responsibilities (pets, houses, kids, spouses, etc) suddenly want to try this lifestyle. you made your choice of being trapped in one place, and should suffer the consequences.

Thanks for your input, but for my second residence in Serbia, I will only be renting, so that probably won't be a problem, I don't think, for last time I did it, I just took over the utilities while I was there. I have looked at those "home swaps" but there is like hardly anyone from the area that I want to go to, and not for length of time...but that WOULD be ideal as the money that would be saved would be fantastic!

Thanks for the optimistic response...and I agree with you totally that it can be possible!

Umm...I can tell that you are young! Trapped? Suffer the consequences??? Don't think so. I am just now in a different phase of my life where I CAN do this....no matter what I have at home. I am just looking for advice to make it easier.
