I'd go for Istanbul ahead of any of the others, not just for the history but for the attitude of the locals to visitors. We found them most hospitable .

Instanbul. Once upon a time Constantinople/Byzantium was the most important city in Europe. Now it's a huge, bustling, exotic city the size of London spanning two continents with amazing architecture.

other 3 cities are not even in same calibre with İstanbul for vacation.
if you want a comparison Rome, İstanbul,Barcelona may be compared with pros and cons..

istanbul is far more vibrant, exotic, epic than the rest with variety of people, things to do, sightseeing & shopping options what ever.

PS:i have been to rome and athens, live in istanbul and as i know tel aviv is not safe like- most middle east.why would you go there for vacation anyway..i would ask for a pay to go there.

Out of those four options, I've only been to Athens already. Wasn't too impressed by the city itself, but I love Greece as a country, especially the islands.

For me, it's a tie between Rome and Istanbul for the first place and a tie between Athens and Tel Aviv for the last place.

Tel Aviv: I'm not really a beach person and I guess there are equally good places for a nice party elsewhere (read: not that far away) in the world. I would go to Jerusalem in a heartbeat, but I'm not too sure about the security in Israel as a whole.

Rome/Istanbul: I wouldn't know which city to choose, if I had the opportunity to go there this weekend. Both have great architecture and lots of history. I also heard that Istanbul has great nightlife.

When I think of Mediterranean vacationing, Rome really doesn't come to mind, it's a big city, not a "vacation" spot.

I guess I would go with Istanbul or Tel Aviv.

Athens is also more of a big city than a vacationing spot.

And Istanbul isn't a big city? The 2nd most populated city proper on earth?

I would choose Tel Aviv in a heartbeat : more southerly, beach culture, great nightlife, a south Californian/ Rio de Janeiro feel, and more secure than the rest of Israel in terms of tensions with Palestinians.
