I think you have to be born into it. Like listen to the man at the pizza joint or Roman Schatz or whoever. Foreigners seldom learn to prounounce Finnish fluently, so don't feel bad about it.
I was born into it though, sort of. I mean I've heard Finnish all my life but I guess just not enough. I can pronounce better than most foreigners though (at least so I've been told) its just some sounds just seem impossible.
A Finnish woman I met once said that in her experience foreigners living in Finland just don't learn Finnish, or at least not well enough to have a meaningful conversation. How far are Finns generally willing to go to accommodate somebody who's been living in Finland for years but who can't understand the language?
Uhm, tricky question. I don't look too nicely on persons who've lived here for like 10 years and still don't speak Finnish. But on the other hand we are all aware that the language is very hard to learn, and don't demand that foreigners or immigrants speak it fluently. It's ok to speak broken Finnish, but at least you should make the effort. Some foreigners are afraid of speaking Finnish as they think they sound stupid, even insulting, but that's not the case. Poor Finnish is better than no Finnish.
Not really. I think you have a nice voice even if I could barely understand a word you said! And I don't know how old you are but you have a deep voice for someone young. That's pleasant.

LOL ok thank you. I don't think my voice is deep at all but others say it is.
When you record it, it does sound different to what you think it would sound.
When you say you couldn't understand would that be because it is quiet or because of the accent?

Mainly because of the accent. Seriously, Irish and Scottish accents are difficult for me to understand, so don't take it personally. And I watch a LOT of BBC programming, so it's more the "thickness" of the accent, I think. I can understand most common British accents very easily. But I have a heck of a time with some of those Irish and Scottish accents!
Doesn't stop me from liking them though. I figure it's more my problem than it is theirs, if I'm in their country! And I could be wrong, but maybe MY English is hard for someone from Scotland or Ireland, or even England, to understand.

No its ok. I can understand your accent it is LOUD and clear lol!
I think most American accents are clear for me but thats probably because of the tv. However, i'm sure rural accents in the back of beyond are hard to understand. When I went to KFC in palm beach we had a black woman from the deep south serve us... Well we could not understand an ounce of what she said, it was like she was talking baby talk. We had to get someone else to serve us, it was like a foreigner speaking English.

That was the only time I encountered that.
Well, I used to be a corporate trainer and do a lot of public speaking, so please forgive my PROJECTING voice - LOL!
And don't feel bad about not understanding a particular American accent - there are a few out there that are very difficult to sort out, even for other Americans. Not many, but a few.
