Funny how, when there is a civil war going on, lots of people get killed. That is probably not a coincidence. What do you suppose the murder rate was like in the USA during the Civil War? About 200,000 murdered per year. That's about ten times as many as nowadays, with no war going on. Imagine what the homicide rate was like in Vietnam during that war.
Here's something to think about. The number of combat deaths of Confederate troops in the Civil Was is listed at 74,000, in a war that lasted four years, which is 18,000 a year. In recent years the homicide rate in the US is around 16,000 a year. Which means Americans are killing as many civilians every year now, as the number of enemy soldiers they killed in the Civil War.
The general consensus of historians indicate that the total number of Indians who were methodically killed in known massacres by white men in America, in 400 years of history, is probably smaller than the 16,000 homicides that take place every year in the USA.
There are only five countries where the murder rate is higher than the motor vehicle accident death rate in Thailand.
wouldn[t that make Thailand one of the most dangerous countries in the world, even though their murder rate is very low? Even more so, because murder victims are nearly all within a highly predictable subgroup according to lifestyle, while traffic accidents strike the population at random, and everyone has an equal chance of that risk. As a visitor or an ordinary Thai working stiff, you would be about 100 times as likely to die in a traffic accident, as being murdered.
If you add together the murder rate and the traffic death rate, Venezuela becomes the most dangerous country in the world, where a person has the highest risk of dying as a result of an immediate trauma caused by the actions of another person.
Out of a million Venezuelans, 370 will die in traffic, 450 will be murdered, and 999,180 will not be killed at all, which sounds pretty safe to me.
Is anybody counting how many Americans, compared to other countries, will die as a result of unaffordable health care? Wouldn't that make the USA the most dangerous country at least in the developed world? A generally accepted figure is 45,000 such murders, which is three times the number of prosecutable homicides that can be blamed on somebody.
Finland has the highest murder rate in the 'old west' followed by Belgium and Greece, but the probability to be murdered on the street is 0.0%. Some 50% of the murders are done by alcoholics / junkies that are complete castaways from the society and often homeless (amd the victims are as well). some 35% of the murders are jealousy-murders, usually an unemployed and depressed alcoholic murdering his ex-girlfriend. Some 0.4% are murder-robberies, which equals around 4 cases a year, and the majority of the remaining percentage are financially motivated murders. And often these cases are also equipped with organized crime.
And internationally, for example in Chicago the majority of murders are gang violence that happens in a few blocks of the city, and while Chicago has a high murder rate per capita, most of the areas are completely safe for anyone. And even if you venture to the areas with most violent crime, if you're not getting murdered if you're not a part of a street gang.
Returning to Finland, 1.4% of the male populace and 0.5% of the female has ever encountered violence of the street, and that is 104,000 individuals of the whole population, also babies and elderly. Muggings, burglaries, car thefts etc are way higher in Spain than Finland, and despite they having half of the murder rate we have, I would most certainly be more aware there than here in terms of safety.

That's like saying in a city with 1.000.000 people, there will be 450 homicides!
NYC has 8 million people & had (correct me if I'm wrong) 500 murders last year.
