You can have a lot of fun in a poor place as long as you're not poor.

Most of south american cities in fact are not exactly poor, but unequal. The most central areas in many of them look not very different of cities in Europe or USA, and we can find mansions of millionaires which are extremely large and sumptuous, rare to see even in Europe. The poverty and crime are in the outskirts of the cities, with few exceptions.

Not really. Many times those places are not very safe either. And it sucks to see beggars, street children etc

Some people get a kick out of looking at poor indigenous people in far away countries, like seeing animals in a zoo.

Yea huge mansions are not really in style here(even if you can afford them). I don't understand how this makes those cities less bad? I think it's just sad to see that extreme inequality found in 3rd world

Yes, I agree. But inequality is not the same of poverty. It means that the wealthy is badly distributed, with some places where the people is extremely rich and other places where the people is extremely poor. This is a typical (and sad) trait of Latin America. In Africa, on the other hand, the poverty in the cities is widespread, and rich people in some african cities - when they exist - would be in Latin America considered middle-to-low income people.

Rio has too much crime and poverty for my taste And I'm not interested in women shooting ping pong balls out of their vaginas
