I would say relatively uncommon here up in northern MN.

This "Support Our Troops" bumper sticker, on the other hand, was very popular, mainly during the War in Iraq.

In California, you see almost as many Mexican flags as American ones, especially in southern California.

In Singapore , we are only allowed to display our national flag July to August ( our national day is 9 August ) if you continue display you could be fined (not sure the amount though)

But in the period we are allowed to display it is pretty common , though seems like last year many pple did not display their flag

In Australia I guess mostly government buildings, schools, and sometimes private properties. You might also see the aboriginal flag, and sometimes the state flag.

Come Australia day though everyone is decked out in the flag.

In Vietnam and Thailand you see the flag like literally every hundred metres or so.

Usually on official flag days and private occasions such as birthdays, weddings and so on.
Official buildings have their flags up daily.

You had probably best define what "patriotism" means.

In front of houses:

If you do that in France people will assume you are a fascist / you hate foreigners. People don't even do that for july 14th (Bastille day). It is quite normal though to see people with faces painted in blue/white/red when the national team (football / rugby / basketball / handball / etc) play an important game.

In Italy I don't see it too much either but it seems slightly more common, at least for some days like April 25th (1945 liberation day, very important in Bologna) and of course for football. Overall Italy is much less nationalistic than France so showing the flag is less viewed as an overtly strong nationalist thing. Few people actually care.

Obviously in both countries you see flags in every official building but that is completely normal.

You'll only see flags in front of government buildings.

Also, most public housing projects display flags on May 1st (Staatsfeiertag) and October 26th (Nationalfeiertag; national day).

Besides that you'll be hard pressed to find flags in an average neighborhood. Only the fiercest nationalists would put a flag in front of their homes.
