Going by memory, it seems like the US flag is more common over private homes, but the Canadian more for institutional/commercial use.

Last time I was in Nouveau-Brunswick, the Acadian tricoleur was flying over almost every house. Like the Ode to Newfoundland, people are more heartfelt in their embrace of a subnational symbol they have chosen themselves, rather than one that is "officially" imposed.

The US one is probably that huge one we see before events like the Super Bowl where it takes up 3/4 of the field.

Good question. I never really thought about it before. I'd day they are perhaps on par with one another.
