I'm shocked as to no one said, Abraham Lincoln. The man saved the Union and ended slavery.

Technically he ended slavery in the south, which of course didn't do anything since the south didn't consider themselves part of the union. Slavery in the north was already non-existant.

Napoleon Bonaparte. He managed to push back the English, the French peoples' long enemies, the Prussians, and basically expand France's influence and land, and even pushed into Russia! Then when the Russian winter demolished his forces and was eventually forced into exile, he led an uprising and ALMOST did it again!

If that isn't a skillful and brave leader I don't know what is.

The revolutionaries of Japan prior to the Edo period. If it wasn't for them, Japan would likely have become a vassal state to Western powers eager to carve up the island into colonies, since the shogunate shunned technology in preference to the old way of tradition.

The first American colonies who successfully led a guerrilla terrorist war against the British. I think we were the first examples of British territories breaking away from the Empire.
