What do you guys think? Would it be possible to take a vacation to a beautiful location and write while there? Perhaps write scenes involving the local scenery that could later be worked into a larger piece?

How about within a small group doing the same thing and then comparing and critiquing work at the end of each day?

Would there be time to both sightsee and write?

This sounds wonderful.

All good writers actually go and spend some time at their setting. Some are no doubt inspired by the setting they might have gone to by chance.

Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance holds two writing retreats each year. In the spring they go to camps on a lake in northeastern Maine, and in the fall they retreat in southern Maine. There is a three hour workshop/critique each day. The rest of the day is free. It works well for me.

I was inspired by chance by a tiny historical plaque in a county park that led me to look up information on the community that once lived there. I've gone back to the park and photographed the river that runs through--it's all a wooded area, and I can imagine that it looked very similar 150 years ago to the way it does now.

My character will be traveling to another state, and so I plan to visit that historical site in the near future.

I wish I could do something like that! It's been my dream for a long time. Unfortunately, with a two year old, ths kind of thing will have to wait.
But if any of you gets a chance to do it, then I say go for it!
