I've been hearing & reading this more & more lately--
"the project needs completed;"
"it needs done today;"
"the car needs fixed"

is this just another bothersome modern thing, or what?

I heard that a lot when I lived south of the Mason-Dixon line, and I assumed it was a regional thing because I don't think I've heard it elsewhere.

Well, the Brits often use "needs", most often with a gerund, as in "The car needs fixing." But the quoted uses, in the passive voice, are dropping the transitive verbal "to be".

My ex used to say "My shirt needs washed." I asked him where the shirt could pick up a can of washed.

Heard this a lot when I lived in central Ohio. Like Dark of, I assumed it was a regional thing.

Are the people you hear saying it from Pittsburgh? It's definitely a Pittsburghese thing, although it's prevalent in WV too. I can't freaking stand it. EVERYONE up here says it ALL the time. They even write it. I moved up here 3 years ago and refuse to ever speak this way.
