I have no idea where this originated, but I had a sorority sister who introduced me to the phrase, "Strange, sad, but somehow symbolic..." It's become my favorite.
On the other hand, I want on my tombstone: "What a long strange trip it's been...."
I love song lyrics. My faves:
I Wanna Get Better -- Bleachers (Jack Antonoff)
The whole album pays tribute to teenage angst with a nod to the 80s vibe. My anthem has become, "I Wanna Get Better," but there's something about the imagery below and the way it trips off the tongue that is particularly catchy and appealing:
"While my friends were getting high and chasing girls down parkway lines
I was losing my mind 'cause the love, the love, the love, the love, the love
That I gave wasted on a nice face."
I Will Possess Your Heart--Death Cab for Cutie
These lyrics read like a Rumi poem--the most spiritually erotic imagery of the call of the Lover to the Beloved that I've ever heard or read:
"How I wish you could see the potential,
the potential of you and me.
It's like a book elegantly bound but,
in a language that you can't read.
Just yet.
You gotta spend some time, Love.
You gotta spend some time with me.
And I know that you'll find, love
I will possess your heart."
Jars of Clay Lyrics: FRAIL, FLOOD, WORLDS APART, PUPPET ON A STRING--if you can get past the obvious Christian sentiment and focus on the pure emotion behind the imagery and the power of Dan Haseltine's voice. The passion in his voice reminds me of Marcus Mumford.
This actually made my list of phrases I hate. It makes me feel nauseous every time I hear it.
