Many years ago, with the goal of improving instruction, my school district bought a couple of video cameras and recorders so that teachers could tape themselves and see/hear exactly what their students saw and heard. I can recall one of our teachers--who was one of the best--being absolutely horrified to learn that she inserted "okay?" after almost all of her statements to her classes.

She had been totally unaware of this speech pattern, and once she realized what she was saying and how often she was saying it, she made a concerted effort to improve matters.

We all have our verbal tics. I'm guilty of using "That being said." Shrug.
