We just hiked back up in the hills behind us. The crust on the snow ( 18 degrees) made the hike possible and enjoyable. Should have taken the sled for the trip back down the hill.

Looks like your braking method was effective.

Years ago when I was in High School in the Black Hills. My stepbrother, who was in to skiing, wanted to ski powder, fresh powder. So he had me drive him to this one place on Nemo Rd. Drop him off and he was going to ski down the hill and I was going to pick him up down there. The road made a big switchback so I could get close.

I got to the designated place and he wasn't around. So I went looking and found him. At the bottom of the hill was a bob' wire fence. About 2 inches of the top wire were sticking out of the snow. Of course, with powder, he sank far enough to hook his boots on the bottom wire and end over end he went. Tore up a really good pair of ski boots. But he was laying out there, about 20 ft beyong the rock that was sticking about 2 inches out of the snow.

Warning - Always check your path, prior to making the run at 30+ mph and you can't stop.

That reminds me of a funny story, EH. I used to do quite a bit of downhill skiing. After a few years of haranguing my wife, I finally got her on skis. She stayed on the bunny slopes for a long time, and then finally on a trip to Red Lodge I talked her into trying an intermediate run with me -- Lazy M for those of you familiar with that ski area.

We were s-l-o-w-l-y working our way down the slope when a young kid came flying past us out of control, went off the slope tumbling and landed on a downed tree, then lay there screaming. We both thought he was hurt badly, so my wife took off her skis and went to his aid while I took off down the run for the ski patrol.

I got back a half hour later to a steaming mad wife. She'd made it probably another 100 yards down the slope. The young man? I guess he jumped up before she even got to him and took off again, leaving my wife alone on the steepest mountain slope that she'd ever seen. It took her a couple years to forgive me for that one!
