Enjoy your time here. And study hard. And eat well. And dress warm.

(Sorry - had a "mom" moment)

Years ago, there was passenger traffic on the rails through Cheyenne, hence the construction of the train depot in the downtown area and the main hotels directly across from it.

But passenger rail here was discontinued in more recent times because there wasn't sufficient fare paying passengers to justify the route any longer. Other than a nostaglic ride infrequently scheduled, there aren't a lot of people who want to do that ride. Even the Denver-Cheyenne run, steam powered, is scheduled once a year and sometimes sells out in advance, but it's just a nostaglic run for the steam buffs.

I have often wondered why people are so against mass transit like trains. All of the rail passenger lines, except the East Coast, has suffered. I would love to travel by train in the West.

It has a lot to do with no local transportation such as buses. If you travel by rail to the next major town, there will be no way to get around once you get there. It would take a strong local bus system in support of the rail system to make it work. Of course, like Sunsprit mentioned, the motels were also in support of the rail system, but with a good bus system, motel/hotels would not necessarily have to be right there.
