I'm a telecommuter for a company in Silicon Valley. Been thinking about making a move to Jackson for a while now - the beauty there is simply astounding. My rental budget is around $2K for an apartment. I've looked on craigslist and couldn't find much; maybe an apartment or two, but that's it. It's not that apartments are too expensive, but rather, they don't seem to be on the market at all. Housing shortage, I'm guessing. Are there other places/websites to look for apartments in the area?

Also, regarding apartments in the area, let me know if you have any recommendations.

I know the skiing is world class, but how's the fishing?

Can't wait.

PS I used to live in Montana, so I'm quite familiarized with remote living, winter weather, etc.

Driggs and Victor in Idaho just on the other side of the Tetons from Jackson Hole might have more options. Though a lot of people go there too to be in proximity to Jackson Hole.

Places south of Jackson Hole in Star Valley also might be good candidates: think Alpine or Afton.

Also, though it's over an hour from Jackson Hole, the Pinedale area in Sublette County WY is also breathtaking (and a lot less crowded).

Just make sure you have good internet/phone in your rental......it can be dicey in some areas.

The housing market in Jackson (the Town is "Jackson", the surrounding Valley area is "Jackson Hole") is driven by the high dollars of the upper end tourist industry. Inexpensive rental housing is not part of the local economy here any more than it is in other high dollar resort towns that you're familiar with. The "worker bees" of these resort towns live out of the area and commute in, or live the "ski bum" lifestyle where they get together with roommates and share a place, splitting expenses.

As mentioned above, the "worker bees" of Jackson commute in from other areas in Idaho or from the Star Valley. Here's where you'll find a housing marketplace with price points that meet your budget and it's a more balanced economy where an investor can acquire rental housing and keep it rented out. You'll still have good scenery and access to the outdoor recreation of the area nearby but at an affordable price point.

IMO, seeking to live in the midst of a "high dollar, high profile tourist/resort town" is something accessible only to the folks with disposable income to the point where they don't have to ask what it costs.

My thought while stopping in Jackson was, "so this is how the rich folks live". The scenery is terrific but we got "bait and switched" for a very expensive night at a resort east of Moran. We are NOT going back there.
