My daughter told me there is almost an "oil boom" happening in Wyoming, lots of work, pretty good pay. Is this true? How would someone living elsewhere get on in the oil fields. Wyoming seems like a very friendly place, somewhere we would really like. We've been in the south for years now and have been looking to get out, but haven't really found the right place yet. If the oil boom isn't happening, are there still good blue collar jobs out there that pay more than minimum wage?

Any advice?

It is more of a gas boom but mostly the same companies and jobs. And there are several communites where you can get good work easily if you can pass a drug test. There are many other threads here that will give you more info .Take some time to look around and find them. Have you ever been to Wyoming? The best way to get work is to be here and be ready to work.

There is indeed work to be had in the extractive industries, however all is not a bed of roses here, as housing is often expensive and in short supply. Last night KCHY-TV ran an article on the growing number of folks who find themselves stranded and homeless. These poor souls sell everything to finance a move to Wyoming, but then find they don't have the "first, last and security" money needed to get a rental. (And, since rentals are very scarce in the boom areas, landlords can and do demand large deposits).

Over two-thirds of all newcomers to Wyo are gone within a year. I strongly suggest that you do lots of research before committing to a move.

The housing situation is getting better. More homes on the market, and prices are beginning to fall a little. Still way too high, but looking better.
