Hello,
First time posting - We are thinking of moving to Rock Hill area. I have a 14, 19 and 22 year old. As far as schools, it looks like the Northwestern high school is the one to go with in that area. Is this true? Should I be looking in a nearby area that has a better school system? Also interested in Colton builders. Their houses look like they are built solid. Anyone familiar with them? Last question - After reading some posts, I have a concern for the crime. What is the story with that? It didn't seem like an area I would have to worry about that. Thanks for any help, I need it. PS - thought Charlotte would be a good place for the older two kids to have nearby for jobs, entertainment, etc. Is this good?

RH might be a bit too far if you want to be somewhat close to Charlotte (not that it's all too far). My faince graduated from NW and it's decent. However, if you want to be closer to Charlotte with a better school system and less overall crime, look into Fort Mill.

For a NJ commuter moving down here, RH is an okay commute. I did the 60-minute each way commute in NJ for a while!! But I still agree with groove1 - commuting from Fort Mill is just that much shorter than commuting from RH to make it worthwhile (my current commute is 30 minutes from FM).

As for crime, as with any medium-sized city there are pockets of crime throughout. However, there are also sections of Rock Hill that are LOVELY and well worth living in.

Another advantage to Fort Mill is that most parts of it are close to the light rail line in Charlotte, so the kids would be able to enjoy things uptown like theatre, hockey, basketball, football etc. Also would come in handy if they end up working in dowtntown Charlotte. Just don't let them go on the 4th of July.

I moved to RH two years ago (from NJ) and have been unhappy. It does depend on what part of town you live in. There are some really nice subdivisions but unfortnately for me I did not buy in one of them. The biggest difference from what I have learned by reading the Herald is that the Fort Mill school system is one of the best in the state. Rock Hill, not as good. Almost half the people in RH live at or below the poverty line. It's an old mill town where, for generations now, education was not a priority because one could always get a job in a mill. The mills are gone and half the population has not changed its attitude toward education. I live off Cherry, off Constitution, behind Boyd Hill apartments (which are Section 8 housing). It sounds like you're moving into a better area. There are gangs (the Bloods) living in my general vacinity. I wish you lots of luck. I'm hoping to move to Fort Mill. I miss NJ.

I have never heard of Colton Builders. Where did you find them?
