Description: When the University of Alabama first opened its “Birmingham Extension Center” nearly 75 years ago to accommodate students who were unable to make the trip to Tuscaloosa, the steel industry was booming. No one could have predicted that Birmingham would eventually be counted among the nation’s top centers for medicine. Today, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is the largest employer in the state of Alabama. The Alabama Museum of Health Sciences, housed in the Lister Hill Library on the campus of UAB, reflects Birmingham’s transition from the steel industry to the present day. Complete with information and collections of artifacts marking 700 years of medical advancements, the museum features an assortment of historical instruments, equipment, and devices that illustrate the advancement of health sciences. Although the museum is free and open to the public, admission prices for exhibitions may vary. Visit the website for more information on upcoming events and exhibitions.
