Description: Its first school was a 5-room adobe building in 1893. Today the district has 22 schools and is growing by leaps and bounds along with the population of the Oro Valley and Catalina areas of the valley. The 109-square-mile district extends as far south as Grant Road, to the north it reaches the Pima County line, on the west is Shannon Road, and east is Campbell Avenue. Over 14,000 students attend 13 elementary, 3 middle, and 3 high schools. Two of the elementary schools contain kindergarten through 8th grade.Also within this district is a privately operated program called Community Extension Programs (520-888-2727) that offers before- and after-school programs for students in the elementary schools. It’s conducted at the elementary school sites and costs include a registration plus monthly fees. The before- and after-school programs are also available at selected school sites during holiday breaks and the summer.Amphi is known as one of the best public school districts in the valley. On standardized test scores that compare it with other districts, Amphi students score among the highest. Their high schools also have outstanding athletic programs.Some of the schools operate on a traditional calendar year that ends in late May and starts in mid-Aug, while others are on a modified year with a shorter summer vacation and several intersession breaks.
