Description: Casinos are hot in Tucson, bringing in revenue for several indigenous tribes. The Desert Diamond Casinos, with 3 locations (2 in Tucson and 1 in Why, Arizona) are among the largest moneymakers. Owned and operated by the Tohono O’odham Nation, they have over 1,200 employees.Opened in 1993, the original Desert Diamond Casino on Nogales Highway hosts more than 1,000 fast-paced slot machines, blackjack, poker, a large bingo center, and keno. The casino also offers a full-service bar, grill, and a 24-hour snack bar for late-night munchies. The location at Pima Mine Road just south of Tucson opened in 2001. The Santa Fe–style architecture, fountains, exhibits of Native American crafts, and open plazas are a delight just to wander through even if you’re not into gambling. The complex is home to the upscale Agave Restaurant as well as lunch and dinner buffets, a grill, and a sports bar. The gaming area looks like it has descended from outer space and features 500 slot machines plus live blackjack and keno. The 2,400-seat Diamond Center serves as a venue for live acts (see the Nightlife chapter). Open 24/7; you must be 21 to enter the gaming area.
