Description: If you can’t go to Munich, let Munich come to you at the annual Oktoberfest. Sink your teeth into authentic bratwurst smothered in mustard and sauerkraut, then chase it down with a bold German beer. There are oompah-pah bands, stein-holding contests, traditional German dancing, and, of course, the crowd-pleasing chicken dance. The event takes place for most of September and October and is limited to weekends.

Serving Southern California since 1946, Lucci’s has an abundance of heat and eat items, a deli stocked with more than three dozen varieties of meat and cheese, and a bakery filled with fresh cannoli, breads, and more.

Description: Huntington Beach, the original Surf City, USA, is the quintessential beach town and the ideal place to witness the Hurley US Open of Surfing. The week-long event, which gets underway during mid-July, is held on the city beach along Pacific Coast Highway at the foot of Main Street. In addition to watching both men and women compete for points and prize money in the title event, you can also enjoy late-afternoon concerts, a fashion competition, the best in skateboarding, and plenty of activities, demonstrations, and product booths. This is, without a doubt, the world’s largest surfing contest and has been a much anticipated summer event for more than 50 years. Best of all, it’s free.

Description: Southern California’s surf culture is celebrated and heralded in the heart of Orange County’s surf mecca, Huntington Beach. Within its confines are displays of surfing artifacts and memorabilia, the camera that captured the movie Endless Summer on film, an homage to surf legend Duke Kahanamoku, classic surfboards, and more. Just down the road at the corner of Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway are the outdoor Surfers’ Hall of Fame and the Surfing Walk of Fame.

8. Nickel! Nickel! Five-Cent Games

Description: Unlike other arcades, Nickel! Nickel! charges a modest admission, about $2 per person, then guests can choose to play from 25 “free play” games. Most machines average one to four nickels per play and include video games and simulators. There is also a redemption counter, the largest in all of Orange County, where guests can redeem winning tickets for token prizes. There are approximately 180 games from which to select.
