Description: Located in the southwest corner of Colorado Springs, Cheyenne Mountain School District is another of the excellent school districts in the region. Commonly referred to as D12 or Cheyenne, this district has a total enrollment of approximately 4,600 students in preschool through grade 12. There are five elementary schools offering grades K–6, and one preschool. The district has one junior high school for grades 7–8, a high school for grades 9–12, and a charter school serving grades K–6.District 12’s students are annually near the top of all schools in Colorado in academic achievement. Approximately 90 percent of the high school graduates go on to college, many to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the nation.Programs offered district-wide include instructional technology, special education, instrumental music, vocal music, art, drama, world language, and physical education. In addition, there is an early intervention preschool and honors classes at the junior high and high school level. A newer program at the high school is CU Succeed Gold, which allows students to earn dual credit from the University of Colorado for courses such as AP Economics, AP Psychology, and AP US History. Also new is an EnVision Math curriculum for all students in grades K–6. The district fronts a full range of co-curricular programs, and its high school sports teams are consistently vying for state championships, especially in men’s and women’s varsity tennis, women’s varsity volleyball, and varsity ice hockey. Cheyenne is the rare exception to the area in that it does not provide daily transportation.
