Colorado has dozens of designated scenic byways and just plain gorgeous drives where everywhere you look there’s something beautiful or interesting. Several are close by and can be done in a day; some might entice you into an overnight stay. You can explore a number of nearby attractions and see some stunning scenery, stop for lunch someplace new, and be home that nightfall to sleep in your own bed (or not!). These drives can be as quick or as leisurely as you like. So buckle up—and don’t forget the camera. Note that many of these drives take you to places you might want to stop and spend some time (see the Day Trips & Getaways chapter), but we don’t address every attraction in every town. Allow plenty of time to dawdle, if that’s your inclination. If you aren’t a dawdler, then all of these drives can be done in a day—albeit maybe a long one. All of these drives are beautiful in summer and downright gorgeous in the fall when the aspens turn to gold and the scrub oak flashes scarlet. Watch the weather carefully in winter and spring—some of these drives can be treacherous when Mother Nature plays her tricks.
