Description: Nearly hidden at the end of a suburban street that opens up to Black Rock Harbor, this vegetarian enclave brings in fans from as far away as New York. Bloodroot calls itself a “feminist restaurant and bookstore with a seasonal vegetarian menu,” and they live up to it. Sunday brunch includes all locally sourced food. Connecticut cheeses, rhubarb cakes, spinach and potato gnocchi, and oatmeal/sunflower seed bread all make appearances, though since the menu changes often, you never know what you’ll get. You can be sure that it will be good, however, and even meat lovers will enjoy these hearty and often taste-bud-baffling dishes. In business for 33 years, this is considered one of the top vegetarian restaurants in America. Don’t be fooled by its humble appearance; Bloodroot continues to do great things within the vegetable kingdom.
