History

Almost every historical account of Jacksonville and coastal Northeast Florida begins 4,000 years ago with the Timucuans, the resident Native Americans credited with the early settlement of these shores. History tells us that, like modern Floridians, the Timucuans loved their oysters, as evidenced by the discovery of huge oyster-shell mounds (or middens) in the remains of their villages in Guana State Park near St. Augustine.
