Description: Are you old enough to remember the Rascals singing Cruisin? Are you old enough to remember American Graffiti? Cruising is, of course, one of the Great American Dreams. Remember how cool you felt when you were finally able to take your baby (car, not girl or guy) cruisin’ down Main Street? Well, at Abacoa Town Center, it happens every month. This is the largest classic-car show in Palm Beach County. On the first Sat of every month at precisely 8:30 p.m., some 400 classic cars go on what is probably the world’s longest cruise, along Main Street. The show actually starts at 5 p.m. when you can ogle the cars, and get in the mood with a live band that starts playing at 7 p.m.—oldies, naturally. You should see these babies: 1950s Chevys and Chryslers and Fords, spit-and-polished and shiny to the nines, rear shark fins dripping with chrome; SS396 SuperSport logos all gleaming silver; green vintage Mustangs from the first years (’63 and ’64) emitting that low, throaty rumble; beautifully preserved classics from the post-World War II years (or jeeps from the World War II years), putting you in the mood to swing, perhaps. Convertibles, hard-tops, coupes, sedans, Woodies, original Volkswagen vans and bugs, station wagons, pickup trucks, early black Fords. The owners are justifiably proud; and if there’s one thing a classic-car owner loves almost as much as working on his car, it’s talking about it, and showing it to people.
