Description: Chef Kris Wessel brings a democratic approach to Miami dining at his eccentric MiMo District. Set in a former “hourly” motel (the name, one would guess, pays homage to the space’s seedier roots), the restaurant now resembles a retro diner and offers outdoor seating overlooking the tranquil Little River. Much like the cuisine of Wessel’s hometown New Orleans, Red Light’s menu is an eclectic mix of different cultural dishes such as seafood gumbo, St. Louis ribs, and shrimp enchiladas. The grilled cheese, made with Fontina and bacon, just might be the world’s perfect comfort food. And if you order the barbeque shrimp, be prepared to ask for extra bread—the Worcestershire and wine sauce it’s served in is addicting. While there are sometimes quibbles about the sluggish service, the excellent food and the reasonable prices (nothing costs over $20) make this a Miami dining experience not to be missed.
