Description: Clark Atlanta University was formed in 1988 through the consolidation of Atlanta University, founded in 1865, and Clark College, founded in 1869. CAU is one of only two private, comprehensive, historically black universities in the nation offering programs of instruction and research from bachelor to doctorate degrees. CAU’s approximately 3,700-member student body is 70 percent female. The university provides on-campus housing for 1,800 students. The student-faculty ratio is 16 to 1. Several of CAU’s dormitories provided the setting for Spike Lee’s movie School Daze. CAU operates the popular jazz radio station WCLK 91.9 FM. Clark Atlanta’s 5,000-seat stadium was one of two venues used for hockey competition during the Olympics. A 470-bed dormitory, built for use by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, houses students. CAU was also the official institution for the Olympic Host Broadcast Training Program, which trained 1,200 college students to work with national and international professional journalists during the Games. More than $2 million of the program’s state-of-the-art digital equipment was donated by Panasonic Broadcast Television Corp.
