Description: Emory had just 15 students when it began back in 1836; today almost 13,000 (representing all 50 states and 105 nations) are enrolled there. In addition to the 631-acre Atlanta campus, Emory has a two-year division, Oxford College, in Oxford, Georgia, about 35 miles east of Atlanta. The undergraduate student-faculty ratio is 10 to 1. About 30 percent of students live on campus in residence halls and apartments. Emory’s five libraries house more than two million volumes. In 1980, Emory received the assets of the Emily and Ernest Woodruff Fund; the $105 million gift was the largest ever given to a philanthropically supported institution up to that time, and during the next dozen years its value more than quintupled. Since 1990 Emory has increased the size of its physical plant, building or acquiring more than 1.6 million square feet. Especially notable is the Michael C. Carlos Museum on campus (designed by famous architect Michael Graves). The Carter Center is an interdisciplinary arm of Emory. Emory University Hospital is a nationally known medical facility (and a favorite of ailing celebrities). Its schools and programs consistently rank among the highest in the country.
