Description: In 1881, Morris Brown College first held classes for 107 students in a wooden building at the corner of Boulevard and Houston Street. Its name honors the memory of the second consecrated bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church; the college was founded through the generosity of the members of Big Bethel AME on Auburn Avenue. Its faculty members take pride in motivating not only average and better-than-average students but also those considered to be high risk. Today more than 2,500 students pursue degrees in more than 40 areas of study. The student-teacher ratio is about 36 to 1. As of 2009, Morris Brown is still unaccredited. In December 2002 the school lost its accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the most important regional accreditation agency, primarily due to concerns about Morris Brown’s financial situation. The school has filed an appeal with SACS, stating that it believes this situation may be resolved over time; the best advice we can offer is to check with Morris Brown’s Web site or the local news agencies for the final outcome. Morris Brown’s 15,000-seat Alonzo Herndon Stadium was the site of the finals in men’s and women’s hockey during the Olympics and the 2002 film Drumline.
