Description: Woodward was founded in 1900 by Colonel John Charles Woodward as Georgia Military Academy. In the mid-1960s the school dropped the military focus, went coeducational, and was renamed in honor of the founder. The curriculum is college prep with a traditional structure. The diverse student population of 2,900 studies on two campuses. The John’s Creek campus in north Fulton County is for grades prekindergarten through grade six. The main campus, which also offers pre-K through sixth grades, sits on about 65 acres and has more than 55 buildings, including a state-of-the-art science center and a library with approximately 200 Internet connections. A new Dobbs gymnasium, housing a variety of facilities including the school’s athletic offices, was dedicated in 2009. Woodward also has a natatorium, and football, track, and practice fields. Woodward has third-generation students from some Atlanta families and many alumni employed on campus. Woodward transports more than 1,000 students by bus daily. Approximately 60 percent of Woodward’s faculty members have at least a master’s degree. The student-teacher ratio is approximately 18 to 1.
