Description: Shepherd Center (formerly known as Shepherd Spinal Center) in Buckhead is a private, not-for-profit hospital specializing in catastrophic care. The hospital treats people with spinal cord injury and disease, acquired brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and other neuromuscular disorders and neurological problems. In 2009 it was ranked in the Top 10 Best Rehabilitation Hospitals by U.S. News and World Report. Serving the Southeast since 1975, the 132-bed specialty hospital offers a continuum of health care services ranging from intensive care through acute rehabilitation and subacute care to outpatient services. The center houses the largest model spinal cord injury program in the country and a 20-bed brain injury unit. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society designated Shepherd the official Southeastern Multiple Sclerosis Center. The hospital’s MS center treats 1,300 patients and participates in clinical research, including the Shepherd/Harvard Multiple Sclerosis Research Initiative.
