Description: Founded in 1988 in a church basement, Actor’s Express has grown into one of Atlanta’s most respected theater companies, led by artistic director Jasson Minadakis. The group got its big break in 1991 when it produced the world premiere of The Harvey Milk Show, a musical based on the life of the assassinated San Francisco gay rights leader. It played to sold-out audiences and was later produced in other cities. In 1997, Actor’s Express stepped on some toes when it modified Oklahoma! The publishers and copyright holders of the Rodgers and Hammerstein work objected to the changes to the original Oklahoma! script, so the director and cast had to make last-minute changes back to the original script or close the show. A typical season includes classics, comedies, and tough psychological dramas.
