Description: One of Savannah’s oldest colleges, South University has grown from its humble beginnings as a two-year business college into a four-year institution offering degrees ranging from associate and bachelor’s to master’s and doctorates. Through its School of Business, School of Health Professions, School of Pharmacy, and a diverse offering of online programs, students can now pursue a wide variety of majors in the classroom, online, or through a combination of both. Within the School of Business, the university offers a bachelor of business administration and bachelor of science degrees in legal studies and information technology in addition to associate of science degrees in accounting, business administration, paralegal studies, and information technology. The School of Health Professions offers a bachelor of science in physician’s assistant and health-care management, master’s degrees in physician’s assistant, anesthesiologist assistant, and professional counseling in addition to its associate of science degrees in medical assisting and physical therapist assisting. South University was the first college or university in Savannah to award a doctorate degree through its School of Pharmacy. The School of Pharmacy was, at one time, one of only three such schools in the state of Georgia and, unlike other similar schools, it features a three-year, full-time accelerated program resulting in a doctor of pharmacy degree. With more than 1,000 full-time students and hundreds of online students attending classes at South University, the average class size is 15 students per teacher, resulting in personalized attention from faculty who have been hired from some of the top universities in the country. The school dates from 1899, when it was founded as a practical business college. The university was formerly located in downtown Savannah but moved to its current location on Mall Boulevard to accommodate the significant growth in students. Today, the campus covers more than 10 acres and features complete wireless computer access, student lounges, state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, and a 47-foot-high clock and bell tower that marks the center of campus.
