Description: This general acute-care hospital dates from 1875 when the Sisters of Mercy of the Roman Catholic Church took over operation of the Forest City Marine Hospital, a facility in downtown Savannah that specialized in the treatment of sick seamen. A year later the operation was moved to more spacious facilities at Taylor and Habersham Streets and was renamed St. Joseph’s Infirmary. It was named St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1901 and expanded several times before a new facility was built on the Southside in 1970. In the years between the move south and the merger with Candler, St. Joseph’s accomplished a $7 million expansion of its Emergency and Outpatient Building and opened its Sports Medicine Center, Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, and Diabetes Management Center. The hospital is situated on 28 acres and is affiliated with the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and Nemours Children’s Hospital in north Florida.
