Description: This venerable lodging in Western Gateway has been a Des Moines landmark since opening in 1919, hosting a long roster of famous figures, including movie stars, musicians, politicians and other entertainers and luminaries. Twelve US Presidents have made a visit to the hotel, as did Nikita Khrushchev during his landmark tour of America. The large brick edifice has a lobby that feels like the epicenter of its long and storied history. There are 240 rooms, which come with coffeemakers, hair dryers, iron and ironing board and free high-speed Internet access. Suites also have a mini-fridge, sofa and microwave. There’s a pool, whirlpool, sauna and exercise room available for guests.Several restaurants are nearby, including Django and Raccoon River on the same block and Centro just a short walk from the front entrance. The hotel is smoke-free and no pets are allowed. Note: There are plans for an extensive renovation beginning in the fall of 2011 that will close the hotel temporarily, so be sure to plan accordingly.
