Description: Open for nearly 30 years, Skip’s steadfastly refuses to be trendy—and its large crowd of regulars love that fact. Good, all-American food—and stiff drinks—are served up at this old white frame house near the Des Moines airport, with a nice selection of steaks, seafood, and pasta. Pan-fried walleye and blackened salmon are both good fish choices, especially when accompanied by white cheddar scalloped potatoes. Their specialty is Des Moines’s signature dish of Steak de Burgo, a filet cut into two medallions, sautéed in a garlic and herb butter sauce, and then topped with mushrooms. Pasta dishes can be just as rich, with cavatelli noodles topped with Italian sausage and melted mozzarella and blackened chicken pasta served with a Cajun cream sauce. Don’t leave without trying one of the classic desserts, including dark chocolate cake, hot apple crisp, and bread pudding. Reservations not accepted. Closed Sunday.
