Description: To hear the owners tell it, Big Star is simply a honky-tonk bar with a tacqueria. But don’t let that description fool you. Long before the doors even opened at this Wicker Park spot, Chicago foodies and scenesters were buzzing about it. And for good reason: The group behind the project also has their names attached to some of the city’s hottest restaurants and lounges, including Blackbird, Avec, The Publican, and The Violet Hour. Thankfully, Big Star has more than lived up to its hype. With the 1950s bars of Bakersfield, California, as its muse, the decor takes on an almost unfinished look, with concrete floors, exposed light bulbs, and painted brick walls. Dominating the room is a square wood bar with six wooden booths lining one wall. To drink, there are under-the-radar whiskies, bourbons, and tequilas, as well as craft beers from around the country. Or opt for one of their creative cocktails. To eat, award-winning chef Paul Kahan has created a small selection of tacos (the al pastor has already earned signature status), plus sides and snacks, like house-made chips and salsas. Added bonus: The star power behind Big Star doesn’t translate to astronomical prices. Though cash only, there’s an ATM conveniently located by the front door. Open daily for lunch, dinner, and late-night dining.
