Description: It makes perfect sense that the resident dog at this antiquarian and rare bookshop would be a Great Pyrenees—it’s supposedly the oldest dog breed in the world. It’s also no surprise that the bookstore is located in a historic 1883 building, which was built as the headquarters for the M.A. Donohue Publishing Company, and its books proudly sit in mismatched old wood display cases and behind cut-glass doors. Like fine wines, the books here have aged gracefully and gained in status—and price. Try $8,000 for a first edition of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, or $6,000 for a rare copy of Donald Duck signed by Walt Disney. There are plenty of less expensive tomes to be found here, too, covering 16th- to 20th-century American and British literature and Chicago history, along with signed letters from the likes of Nelson Algren and Ray Bradbury, and a good selection of out-of-print titles. Open Tues through Fri 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sat 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment; closed Sun and Mon.
