Description: It’s a good bet you’ll have a grand time at this historic horse-racing facility—and you’ll barely make a dent in your purse with tickets starting less than $5. Arlington opened in 1927 and held the world’s first million-dollar race, the now-famous Arlington Million, in 1981. Tragedy struck in 1985 when the grandstand burned down, but crews managed to erect a temporary structure and the Million, nicknamed the Miracle Million that year, was held here for its fifth run. Making it through a couple of closures, buyouts, new beginnings, and big-time races—the 2002 Breeders’ Cup marked its Midwest debut here—Arlington has come out ahead. It’s not only because of its beautiful park setting, top-notch amenities, and live racing schedule, but also for its busy calendar of family-friendly events and promotions, from post-race concerts to giveaways, Father’s Day barbecues to Independence Day fireworks. General admission tickets—which include access to the Grandstand and the Park—range from $4 to $15 depending on the race, while seating adds to that price, and Arlington Million seat tickets range from $25 to $100. General parking is free; preferred parking ($5) and value ($10) are also available. Check the track’s online tips on which parking area is closest to your seats. Racing runs from early May through late September.
