Description: A trek into this star-studded institution—the first modern planetarium opened in the Western Hemisphere—is quite simply out of this world. Founded in 1930 by Chicago businessman Max Adler, the landmark granite building’s unique look comes from its 12-sided polygon design; each corner represents a sign of the zodiac. But it’s astronomy that shines inside. The highlight is the newly transformed Grainger Sky Theater, featuring the latest in cinematic special effects. Two other theaters provide equally compelling entertainment: The 3D Universe Theater and the all-digital, Definiti Space Theater run shows including “Journey to the Stars,” narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, and “One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure” aimed at younger audiences. Bringing the galaxy down to earth are interactive exhibits like “Telescopes: Through the Looking Glass,” displaying some of the world’s most amazing galaxy-gazers; and “Shoot for the Moon,” whose centerpiece is the fully-restored Gemini 12 spacecraft, along with fascinating stories of space travel. The recently opened “Planet Explorers” is a hands-on discovery zone for kids with stars in their eyes. Discount days offer free general admission and occur periodically through the year, though they tend to get very crowded. General admission $10; seniors $8; children 3 to 11 $6; shows are extra. Hours vary throughout the year, so be sure to check the website before you head out.
