Insider Pick:

Description: No matter the month, tropical plants, flowering desert cacti, lush ferns, delicate orchids, and other gorgeous greenery flourish under the grand glass domes of this historic conservatory just a short skip west of downtown. Completed in 1908, the Jens Jensen–designed structure is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and run by the Chicago Park District (along with its sister Lincoln Park Conservatory). Encompassing an Aroid House, Palm House, the playful and interactive Children’s Garden, a Desert House, the Fern Room—boasting one of the oldest plants on earth—a seasonal display house, and a show space (a spectacular setting for a wedding), the indoor splendor stretches approximately 2 acres. Adding in the stunning outdoor gardens, including a Demonstration Garden and a take on Monet’s garden in Giverny, France, the total bumps to more than 14 acres, landing Garfield Park in the top five largest conservatories in the country. But it’s more than just a pretty face. A full slate of activities and programs includes flower shows, a craft beer tasting, a sweets festival, art exhibits, seedling sales, an active beehive, and more. A severe storm in summer 2011 shattered dozens of the dome’s oldest windows, and efforts are underway to replace them; you might want to donate a few extra bucks to the cause. Free (free parking lot too); some fees apply for special events and exhibits. Open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Wed until 8 p.m.
