Description: Part of the Veterans Affairs Maryland Health Care System, the Baltimore VA Medical Center offers veterans some of the most state-of-the-art facilities available through the military. The 221-bed medical center is home to the world’s first filmless radiology department, which allows doctors nearly instant access to patient imaging from throughout the facility. Conveniently located near the Inner Harbor and next door to the University of Maryland Medical System, the center offers a full range of inpatient, outpatient, and research programs for veterans. The Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center, offering research on strokes and cardiovascular disease prevention through exercise, smoking cessation, and nutrition therapy for older veterans, is one of only 21 VA system providers of these services in the country. The hospital has one of two MS Centers of Excellence centers for the growing population of multiple sclerosis patients and one of the VA’s eight Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Centers. The center in Baltimore offers a wide range of specialties, including a state-of-the-art endoscopic suite; inpatient and outpatient mental health services; MRI, mammography, and CAT scan facilities; a home-based primary-care program; a refractory congestive heart failure program; an outpatient spinal cord injury support clinic; and a senior exercise rehabilitation facility. The medical center offers free parking for outpatients only in its parking lot below the facility on Greene Street. A shuttle service takes patients to and from Perry Point and Fort Howard medical centers, separate facilities that are part of the same network of veterans’ services, on weekdays.
