Description: Cardinal James Gibbons, the ninth archbishop of Baltimore, asked the Sisters of Bon Secours to come from Paris in 1881 to provide health care to the sick in their homes. Through the financial support of philanthropist George Jenkins, they opened the first Bon Secours Hospital in Baltimore in 1919. Now, with 208 beds and 973 employees, that mission has spread to include 10 primary-care centers around West Baltimore; the largest outpatient renal dialysis program in the city; the New Hope Treatment Center, offering drug treatment and counseling; and Operation Reach-Out, a community development program. The hospital merged in 1996 with Liberty Health System to form Bon Secours Medical System. Among Bon Secours Hospital’s specialties are cardiology, podiatry, surgery, substance abuse services, and home health.
